Governor Continues Investment in Broadband Infrastructure Upgrades

SACRAMENTO – Assemblywoman Susan A. Bonilla (D-Concord) and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson released the following statement today on Governor Jerry Brown’s budget proposal for the 2015-2016 fiscal year:

“Today the Governor’s budget proposal included $100 million in one-time funding for further investment in broadband infrastructure upgrades at California public schools.

The proposal builds upon last year’s investment of $27 million which will upgrade internet speeds at 227 schools, serving more than 60,000 students, which currently have no or inadequate internet connections. An additional $100 million would be a significant step forward to ensuring students and educators throughout the state are equipped with the learning tools needed to prepare for today’s global economy which is increasingly dependent on technology.

I commend the Governor for his continued commitment to addressing this important issue.  I am optimistic that working together, we can ensure that every student in California has access to a world class, 21st Century education.”

“I want to thank Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla for her leadership in helping to secure critical funding for the Broadband Infrastructure Improvement Grant, which brought important attention to the issue, and I am pleased to see the Governor proposed another $100 million in his budget,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson. “This funding will go a long way in giving students access to technology, which will prepare them for college and careers.”

Assemblywoman Susan A. Bonilla (D-Concord) was elected in November 2010 and represents California’s 14th Assembly District, which includes Contra Costa County and Solano County.
