Vertex the Police Dog Plays Fetch with High School Students

Horizons Family Counseling has joined with Del Valle Phoenix High School to bring the Youth Outreach Mentoring Program to high school seniors. As part of the program, community leaders visit the school and discuss their career of choice with twelfth grade students.

On November 30, Officer Rich Zogaric of the Livermore Police Department visited Del Valle Phoenix High School to talk about careers in law enforcement. He spoke about the importance of making good choices, highlighting his own career path, and the requirements necessary for the job.

Following a question and answer period with students, he brought in Vertex, his canine partner. Vertex impressed the students by demonstrating his exceptional detecting skills, after which he enjoyed a vigorous game of fetch the ball with students. Students voiced enthusiasm for the visit, noting Officer Zogaric was an engaging and motivational speaker, with one student proclaiming him to be “cool”.

From the Livermore Crime Lab, Gena Steward presented students with career options in the field of crime investigation. Upcoming Youth Outreach Mentoring event for January will feature a 911 dispatcher.
